BackgroundThis nuclear gene encodes a conserved protein that comprises the B13 subunit of complex I of the mitochondrial respiratory chain. The encoded protein localizes to the inner mitochondrial membrane, where it is thought to aid in the transfer of electrons from NADH to ubiquinone. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants. There are numerous pseudogenes of this gene on chromosomes 1, 3, 6, 8, 9, 11, 12, and 16. [provided by RefSeq, Apr 2014],
Functionfunction:Accessory subunit of the mitochondrial membrane respiratory chain NADH dehydrogenase (Complex I), that is believed to be not involved in catalysis. Complex I functions in the transfer of electrons from NADH to the respiratory chain. The immediate electron acceptor for the enzyme is believed to be ubiquinone.,similarity:Belongs to the complex I NDUFA5 subunit family.,subunit:Complex I is composed of 45 different subunits.,tissue specificity:Expressed in all tissues examined with highest levels in heart, skeletal muscle and brain.,
Subcellular locationMitochondrion inner membrane ; Peripheral membrane protein ; Matrix side .
ExpressionExpressed in all tissues examined with highest levels in heart, skeletal muscle and brain.
